Reining Saddles
A reining saddle, as the name suggests, is a Western type of saddle used in the sport of reining. In this competition, the riders guide their horses through specific and exact patterns of spins, stops and circles.
A reining saddle, likewise called a reiner, is used to provide the rider close contact to its horse to enable him to communicate the required moves to his horse in such a subtle way that will not be seen by the spectator. Since reining is a competitive event that shows off a horse's athleticism and the style and advance communication between rider and horse, it is the horse which is the star and not the rider. A good reining saddle will therefore put the rider in a balanced and proper position that would keep him out of the horse's way.

The typical features of a reining saddle are the following: the fork and horn are medium in height so that they will not interfere with the reigns and the hands of the rider, seat is placed low on the back of the horse an is shaped in such a way that the rider's pelvis is allowed to roll back for big stops, free-swinging fenders that are hung from the center of the saddle tree which are designed to maximize the riders freedom to communicate the cues to the horse, skirts that are cutout allowing the closeness of the rider's leg also for better communication, front cinch, thin leather stirrup which also allows the legs of the rider be closer to the horse, dropped rigging, and there may be some flashy trimmings for show during the competition. Reining saddles are not appropriate for use as a working saddle.
